On March 29, 2023, the UNC EFC’s Tom Roberts participated in a panel discussion entitled “Solving Water Issues through Regional and National Collaborations”. The panel was part of the 2023 Mississippi Water Resources Conference hosted by the Mississippi State Water Resources Research Institute. In addition to Tom, participants included:
- Amy Hammett, Director Regional and National Collaborations, Alabama Water Institute
- Dr. Julie Jordan, Vice President, Research and Economic Development, Mississippi State University
- Dr. Martin Locke, Director, USDA-ARS National Sedimentation Laboratory
- Dr. Jason Barrett (Moderator), Associate Extension Professor, Mississippi Water Resources Institute, Mississippi State University
Panelists were asked the following questions:
- What makes an effective collaboration?
- What are the most common pitfalls investigators should be aware of when collaborating?
- If you could go back in time and give the younger you advice about choosing collaborators, what would you say?
- How can young investigators benefit from collaborating with experienced professionals?
- How can seasoned investigators benefit from working with emerging investigators?
- Do you have an ideal number in mind when putting together a group, or to phrase it in a different way, is there a number at which too many cooks spoil the broth?
- What, in your opinion, is the key to success for a collaborative proposal?
- What do you wish people knew about collaborating with your particular organization/institution?
The audience was approximately 100 people including students, researchers, academics and others.
