Tarrant Regional Water District hosted Jeff Hughes to conduct a water utility rate workshop for its customers Wednesday, November 6.

This meeting was a direct result of recent water conservation trends that are leading to a decrease in per capita water use and a noticeable reduction in utility revenues. Looking at the data since 2006, there is a marked shift in the rate of per capita consumption. And there appears to be a growing disconnect between population growth and water use. If the trend continues (and we think it will) utilities will be faced with new challenges that might require new approaches to maintain sound financial performance. This meeting gave

This meeting gave Tarrant customers a better understanding of:

  • how to balance water conservation and revenues
  • how water conservation saves water and money over the long-term
  • how to justify increasing rates, while promoting water efficiency
  • how water conservation is a viable water supply
  • how water conservation will help spread the costs of new supply projects over time and how that translates into real savings
  • how to spell out the benefits of conservation in terms council members can understand
