Alabama has several hundred water and wastewater utilities charging customers a wide range of rates. ADEM and the Environmental Finance Center at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill completed a survey of over 440 utilities’ water and wastewater rates in Fall 2016. In this webinar, we shared insights into rate structure designs, rates, and rate-setting practices of utilities in Alabama. The Alabama Water and Wastewater Rates Dashboard, which was updated using the April 2016 rates data, was presented. This free, interactive dashboard features benchmarking dials that allows utilities to compare their rates, assess the financial health of their water system, measure the affordability of their residential rates, and determine the strength of their conservation pricing signal. The Rates Dashboard is a great tool to help decision-makers comprehensively evaluate utilities’ rates and financial health. It can also serve as a communications tool for a variety of audiences.
