Expenditures on energy, particular electricity, are a necessity for most homeowners. In the Town of Edenton, North Carolina, residential customers spend an average of approximately $140 each month on electricity. This equates to an annual electricity expenditure of roughly 7.3% of the Town’s Median Household Income of $22,798, much higher than the nation’s average of 2.7%. In order to assist the Town of Edenton’s Electric Department gain a deeper understanding into their residential customers’ electric usage and expenditures, the Environmental Finance Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (EFC) used the Town’s electric utility billing data and tax parcel data from Chowan County to analyze the utility’s residential electricity accounts by usage and expenditure characteristics.
